Just under three years ago, we were approached by our neighbour of thirty-two years standing, to tell us that he would be moving, and that he intended to sell the piece of his garden that was between our two houses as a separate building plot. Three days later we had agreed to buy it and using some of our existing garden we began the long process of planning and building what we intend to be our final house.

We selected an architect, and surprisingly quickly, finalised the design.

At this point you need a builder, and instinctively your first thought is that you need to go out to tender. Our second thought was that as the project was going to be in our garden, we wanted to work with people who we liked and who would take away much of the stress. We decided to interview potential contractors.

Our architect suggested that we should talk to Stuart Cranfield of Bell Meadow. We did this at an early stage and immediately decided that this was somebody who we could trust. Rather than a formal tender process, Bell Meadow submitted an outline budget and agreed that they would provide monthly updates of actual costs as the work progressed.

The final result was a completed build very close to the original cost estimate that would have been finished on time but for the Covid Lockdown.

Even more importantly, we now have an extremely high-quality house that we are delighted with. This was achieved with a minimum of stress, and we are still married!

Stuart and site manager Mark ran the project with great efficiency and guided us through the unbelievable number of decisions that faced us at the weekly meetings.
